a "hater" on Christmas :(

Holidays when we are so concerned with our water intake, not over indulging and trying not to PB at the dinner table. We never imagine facing a "hater".
My first hater experience happened today, from my Nana (stepmothers mom) who I have a good relationship with.

She says straight  to my face I can't stand all those Lap Band commercials that are on TV, it's DISGUSTING!

I was so insulted, it was a slap in the face. I am 4 month post op and am down 36lbs since surgery 53lbs total.

Just sad where you need the support the most there can be ignorant people.

Gives me some fuel for the treadmill!!

Merry Christmas ladies! Thanks for listening to me vent

  1. I'm sorry Nicole. I know it must have been hard to hear it from someone you love & trust. Does she know that you had the Lap Band?

If not, maybe in time when she really sees the results on you, you can tell her how you lost it & how it wasn't the easy way out that everyone thinks. Maybe she will get a new perspective from our side.

It will take time for people to figure out that it isn't the easy way to lose weight. But as more & more of us have the Surgery & talk about it honestly, the truth will get out. And hopefully, acceptance as well.

I hope you don't let her "ignorance", as you put it, of the facts get to you too much. We are all here for you, you can vent all you want!!

  2. Nicole, Just remember you are doing this for you, your life, your health. Not for anyone else, you do not require their permission or approval. I have read your blog and all your victories, and you have so much to be proud of! I tend to believe she just doesn't know much about the band, I didn't before my doctor recommened it :)

  3. Unfortunately my Nana knows about my surgery (I am a teller) That's why it was so offensive looking me in the face and telling me lap band commercials are DISGUSTING and doesn't under stand how they are on TV. To me is pretty much the same as saying your disgusting.

  4. You could try telling her that...sometimes when rude people are faced with what they are actually saying they realize it is inappropriate.
"Well, you know I have a lap band, so you saying that is disgusting sounds to me like you are saying I am disgusting..."
Of course, that is easier said than done. You could also just chalk it up to her being an old lady and losing her ability to determine what is appropriate to say out loud...50+ lbs is amazing!

  7. Ouch! It's those unexpected comments that can really get to us. Just know you are making the choice that is best for you to be healthy! I'm new to all the acronyms I'm finding in these blogs. Can you tell me what PB and NSV stands for? Thanks.

  8. PB is product burp, when food gets stuck you can PB which is a loud burp and slimming comes a long with it.(And food usually comes back up)
NSV Non scale Victory, when you haven't lost weight in a week or two but you fit in pants that you weren't able to before.

  9. Thanks for the info. I had lap band surgery July 1 and lost 30 pounds by mid-October. Since then I have maintained but haven't lost any more. I've been reading blogs for information and inspiration.
